While Lineman was still alive, Batt allegedly began draining her funds, making personal purchases using her credit cards, even adding his partner as an authorized user. He also withdrew large sums from her Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley accounts.

After Lineman died in 2019, Batt allegedly continued the scheme, writing checks to himself and making more unauthorized transactions. Despite being responsible for distributing her estate, he reportedly issued only one payment to a beneficiary. According to the district attorney’s office, during his entire scam, Batt made off with $3,715,318.

He’s been charged with theft, financial exploitation of an older adult, and misusing entrusted property. Batt remains in custody after failing to post $99,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is set for May 6.
