Yara Shahidi To Star In Black-ish Spin-Off
The Black-ish brand is growing. According to a report, ABC has potential plans to create a spin-off based off the family comedy. Series creator/executive producer Kenya Barris is said to be heading the project with ABC Studios. Black-ish co-star Yara Shahidi will star in the spin-off, with it focusing on her character Zoey Johnson in college. Former Black-ish showrunner Larry Wilmore is also said to be heading the project as well, and it will be introduced as a backdoor pilot episode on Black-ish this spring.
Black-ish is a sitcom starring Anthony Anderson (Andre “Dre” Johnson Sr.) and Tracee Ellis Ross (Dr. Rainbow “Bow” Johnson) on ABC. The single-camera comedy centers on an upper-middle-class African-American family. The series premiered on September 24, 2014.
Zoey Johnson, is Dre and Rainbow’s 17-year-old daughter. She is the attractive, popular, entitled, stylish, and socially active member of the Johnson family. She is typically apathetic to any dealings with her family and is always treated as the world’s most perfect teenager, despite her generally shallow personality.
The possible spin-off has not been finalized. In other news, Kenya Barris is prepping a ‘White Men Can’t Jump‘ remake. He also signed deal with 20th Century Fox. second new comedy in contention at ABC for next season. Barris, the top comedy writer-producer on ABC Studios’ roster, also co-wrote and executive produces with Vijal Patel hot comedy pilot Libby & Malcolm starring Felicity Huffman and Courtney B. Vance.
