Tracy Chapman Sues Nicki Minaj Over “Sorry” Being Released After Her Request Was Denied
In the days leading up to the release of “Queen,” Nicki Minaj began a mini-social media campaign to get Tracy Chapman’s attention in efforts to receive approval for a clearance on Chapman’s song “Baby Can I Hold You.” The track called “Sorry,” which never made the final album cut, samples Chapman’s song and also featured Nicki’s friend and fellow rapper Nas.

Before “Queen” was released, the request was denied, but days after the release, the track was leaked and also, reportedly made its way to radio airwaves, due to airplay from Funkmaster Flex and The Breakfast Club. According to reports, Chapman is suing Nicki for the release of the song. Court documents outline how Nicki’s song is composed of the lyrics and vocal melody of “Baby Can I Hold You.”

Chapman is suing the rapper for damages and to prohibit Nicki and/or her team from the song being released again. Before the album and song was released, Nicki confirmed her request was denied via Twitter, tweeting
