Breonna Taylor’s Family Reaches Multimillion Dollar Settlement In Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against City of Louisville

While many wait for the arrest and indictment of the three officers involved in Breonna Taylor’s death, her family came out victorious in its wrongful death case against the City of Louisville, Kentucky.

According to reports Tuesday (Sept. 15th), the city settled the civil case for millions of dollars. Her mother, Tamika Palmer, sued the city following the Louisville Metro Police officers’ execution of a “no-knock” warrant at her apartment that left her dead in March.

The attorney for Breonna Taylor’s family, Sam Aguilar, said:

“The city’s response in this case has been delayed and it’s been frustrating, but the fact that they’ve been willing to sit down and talk significant reform was a step in the right direction and hopefully a turning point.”

He didn’t specify how much the family settled for, but the the amount was “substantial.” Insiders have said that the agreement was well into the millions, according to CNN.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer will reportedly make a statement on the settlement later Tuesday (Sept. 15th).

The settlement comes after reports that Breonna Taylor’s case would be going before a grand jury.

A source said the grand jury:

“will be hearing other criminal cases first to get their feet wet with the process and then hear the Taylor case.”

The grand jury will also determine what charges, if any, the three policemen – Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and officers Brett Hankison and Myles Cosgrove – will face.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron released a statement on Twitter Wednesday (Sept. 9th). It reads,

“My office is continually asked about a timeline regarding the investigation into the death of Ms. Breonna Taylor. An investigation, if done properly, cannot follow a specific timeline. When the investigation concludes and a decision is made, we will provide an update about an announcement. he news will come from our office and not unnamed sources. Until that time, the investigation remains ongoing.”
