Viola Davis Jokes That Accepting Michelle Obama Role Was A Moment Of ‘Temporary Insanity’
Viola Davis is gearing up to play Michelle Obama in Showtime’s upcoming series The First Lady.
While she’s a history-making, Oscar-winning actress, she joked that she’s nervous to take on the role.
She said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Friday (March 26th),
“I think it was temporary insanity. I lost my mind for about five minutes, and made a decision that I can’t take back.”
She went on to say that meeting the former FLOTUS was “quite frightening,” adding:
“The woman is a Goddess.”
As for playing the role, Viola Davis continued and said she’s
“just gonna’ do the best I can.”
While Michelle Obama is a large role, it’s safe to say Viola Davis is a fitting actress. She recently became the most Oscar-nominated black woman in history after receiving a nod for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Netlix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
She’s also the only Black woman to have two Best Actress nominations. She received a nomination for The Help in 2012, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Doubt in 2009, and won Best Supporting Actress for Fences in 2017.
