Colin Powell, 1st Black US Secretary Of State, Dies Of COVID-19 Complications At 84 [CONDOLENCES]
Colin Powell, military leader and the first Black US Secretary of State has sadly passed away.
His family announced the news on Facebook, writing:
“General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19. He was fully vaccinated. We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment. We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.The Powell Family”

He was 84 years old.
Colin Powell was notably sworn as former President George W. Bush’s Secretary of State in 2001, making him the nation’s highest-ranking Black public official ever at the time.
Colin Powell once said of the iconic moment,
“I think it shows to the world what is possible in this country. It shows to the world that: Follow our model, and over a period of time from our beginning, if you believe in the values that espouse, you can see things as miraculous as me sitting before you to receive your approval.”

Roughly seven years after his historical swearing-in, he helped make history in the White House again when he used his influence to endorse the country’s first Black President, Barack Obama, just weeks ahead of the 2008 election.
Powell is survived by his wife of nearly sixty years and three children.
