WNBA Star Brittney Griner’s Detention In Russia Extended To May 19, According To Reports
New details have recently surfaced surrounding Brittney Griner’s detention in Russia.
As previously reported, on February 17 WNBA star Brittney Griner, 31, was detained at a Moscow airport after Russian authorities claimed they found vape cartridges while searching her luggage. Reportedly, the cartridges contained oil derived from cannabis, which could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Earlier today (March 17) news broke that a Moscow court has decided to extend Brittney Griner’s arrest until May 19. According to the Russian state news agency Tass, the court said,
“The court granted the request of the investigation and extended the period of detention of the U.S. citizen Griner until May 19.”
A video clip has also surfaced online of Griner’s appearance in court. During the short clip, the professional athlete is walking down a hallway with what appears to be two Russian officers by her side.

Griner plays for the Phoenix Mercury, however, for the last 7 winters she has also suited up for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia, earning over $1 million per season. She was initially arrested in Moscow upon returning to Russia after the league took a two-week break in early February for the FIBA World Cup qualifying tournaments.
