Jay-Z Slammed For Plans To Host Oscars After Party At Boycotted Chateau Marmont, Criticizers To Protest Rapper’s Event

Jay-Z’s afterparty for the Oscars hasn’t even happened yet and the drama has already started.

Reports claim that rapper/businessman Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, has booked the infamous Chateau Marmont to host a party for Hollywood’s superstars on March 27, following this year’s Oscars. As fun as the event is expected to be, the people lucky enough to receive an invitation will have to cross a picket line if they plan on getting inside.

The well-known Los Angeles-based hotel that Jay-Z plans on having his party at has been the subject of an ongoing boycott since 2020. According to reports, over 200 of the establishment’s employees were fired at the beginning of the pandemic, allegedly without insurance or severance. In addition to that, employees have also called the hotel out for racial discrimination, harassment, and an overall toxic work environment. However, Chateau Marmont has denied these claims.

Unite Here Local 11 Union, which is an organization that supports hotel workers, is leading the protest against Jay-Z’s afterparty. The union is planning a picket line the same night as the “Run This Town” rapper’s event that will feature signs and a giant balloon arch to garner attention. Reportedly, some of the organization’s high-profile supporters such as Gabrielle Union, Spike Lee, Issa Rae, Samira Wiley and Ta-Nehisi Coates, are expected to be in attendance for the protest.

The organization released a statement addressing Jay-Z and said,

“UNITE HERE Local 11 is asking Jay-Z to honor the boycott by choosing another venue for the famed after-party.”

In a separate statement the union’s co-president, Kurt Petersen, spoke on the situation and said,

“For Jay-Z to choose the Chateau Marmont for their Gold Party is shockingly insensitive. They must move their event and choose an afterparty hot spot that treats its workers, especially Black women, with dignity and respect. Jay-Z has a responsibility to do better.”

He continued,

“We hope Jay-Z joins Gabrielle Union, Spike Lee, Issa Rae, Robin Thede, Quinta Brunson, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Roxane Gay, Ashley Nicole Black and Samira Wiley in boycotting Chateau Marmont.”

The organization has also shared information on the protest via Twitter and started the hashtag: JayZMoveYourParty.

Jay-Z and Chateau Marmont have yet to speak on the situation.
