Suge Knight’s Former Attorney, Now Representing Tory Lanez, Says He Did Not Represent The Music Executive In The 2015 Manslaughter Case That Put Him In Prison
Suge Knight’s former attorney — who is now representing Tory Lanez — wants people to know he did not represent the former Death Row Records CEO in the case that put him in prison.
As previously reported, crime-based reporter Meghann Cuniff recently revealed that Tory Lanez would be heading back to court on Tuesday (January 10), and this time… Suge Knight’s former attorney, David Kenner, would be next to him. Reportedly, Tory Lanez has secured new representation to defend his assault case because his former attorney, George Mgdesyan, doesn’t handle appeals.
As you may already know, last month, Lanez was found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion, 27. According to Megan Thee Stallion, during the summer of 2020, the 30-year-old singer shot her as she walked away from a vehicle they were in. Due to the injury, she received immediate medical attention and had to undergo surgery to remove bullet fragments from her feet.
On December 23, 2022, a jury found Lanez guilty of all three felony charges he faced — assault with a semiautomatic firearm, vehicle possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
After speculation began making its rounds that David Kenner represented Suge Knight in his most recent case, Meghann Cuniff shared via Twitter on Monday (January 9) that the longtime criminal defense attorney actually represented Knight in a robbery case back in the 1990s and got him probation. Meghann Cuniff wrote from her Twitter account,
“I just got off the phone with Tory Lanez’s new lawyer David Kenner, and it’s clear to me that people need to stop assuming he represented Suge Knight in the case that put Suge in prison. He didn’t! He represented him in a robbery case back in the 1990s and got him probation.”
Cuniff continued,
“Kenner was not Suge Knight’s lawyer for his most recent case, in which he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter over a fatal hit-and-run at Tam’s Burgers in Compton. Kenner is unhappy that so many hip-hop blogs etc are saying he was when he actually wasn’t.”
Recent reports state that there is no bad blood between Lanez and his former lawyer George Mgdesyan. Cuniff tweeted,
“Kenner confirmed to me that George Mgdesyan is no longer representing Tory Lanez. It’s David Kenner all the way. Regarding post-conviction motions, he told me he’s considering all options. He may discuss this a bit tomorrow in court, but the big stuff won’t come until later.”
Speaking on Knight’s 2015 case, Cuniff shared,
“Given all this, it is pretty understandable that websites said Kenner had a part in Suge Knight’s 28-year prison sentence. He’s also quoted in articles talking about the case. But he swore to me on the phone he had nothing to do with the 28 years.”
If you didn’t know, in 2018, Knight, 57, was sentenced to 28 years in prison after catching a voluntary manslaughter charge for fatally hitting businessman Terry Carter with a pickup truck in 2015. He won’t be eligible for parole until 2034. The attorney that represented Knight in the case was Matthew Fletcher. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy and perjury charges in February 2021 and will be barred from practicing law for life. The decision comes after prosecutors accused him of plotting to bribe witnesses so they would lie for the music executive when he faced murder charges in 2016.
