Michael B. Jordan & Tessa Thompson Went To Couples Therapy As ‘Creed III’ Characters: ‘It Was Very Weird’
It looks like Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson took their roles in Creed III seriously–so much so that the two stars went to couples therapy.
During a recent interview, Tessa Thompson revealed she and Michael B. Jordan went to great lengths to prepare for their roles:
“Mike and I actually went to therapy together. We did couples therapy. Yes, in character, but it ended up being like — the line sometimes between character and us gets blurred because we bring so much of what we’re exploring personally to the characters in general. So funnily, it was the first time… I’m probably saying too much. I’ll say it was an early experience in couples therapy for us both [personally], but it was as these characters, which is very weird.”
Thompson and Jordan star in the “Creed” franchise as Bianca and Adonis. The two characters are married and have a child in “Creed III,” but Adonis’ unwillingness to open up about his past drives a wedge between them. In order to process and better understand their characters, the two actors attended couples therapy in character.
Thompson continued,
“Since we’ve been making these movies for eight, nine years, we’ve seen each other through various stages in our own romantic things. So we know stuff about each other’s lives. We shared and talked about it. So therapy ended up starting at work and getting more personal. “
“Also, it was a chance for us to really talk to a couples therapist and understand what are some of the things young parents who are trying to balance their own dreams and aspirations? What are the themes that you see? What are the things they might be up against? What might be their impediments to happiness or success as a couple? That was really fascinating also to hear from her and bring that into the stew.”
Throughout this experience, Tessa Thompson said she’s learned the importance of therapy and how it can benefit a relationship.
“going to therapy, even when a relationship is good, can be a good thing if you’re trying to just sharpen communication and figure out how someone works. It’s useful in so many relationships.”
It looks like their hard work and dedication have paid off.
Reportedly, the film – which was released this past Friday (March 3rd), garnered $58.7 million in North America and $41.8 million overseas, making it the biggest debut of the trilogy. The movie is reportedly playing in 75 territories, and top international markets include France, the U.K., and Germany.
“Creed 3” has been receiving critical acclaim from moviegoers and film critics alike, with many praising Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut. The movie continues to follow the life of Adonis Creed (played by Jordan), as he settles into family life and faces an old acquaintance recently released from prison, played by Jonathan Majors. “Creed” is the continuation of the Oscar award-winning franchise “Rocky,” created by and starring veteran actor Sylvester Stallone.
