Costco Defends DEI Initiatives, Urges Shareholders To Reject Proposal To End Diversity Programs
Costco’s Board of Trustees is standing firm on its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, urging shareholders to vote against a proposal from the National Center for Public Policy Research that calls for an end to these initiatives.
The proposal reportedly argues that DEI efforts are discriminatory and financially risky, referencing the Supreme Court’s ruling against race-based admissions policies.

However, Costco defends its DEI initiatives, stating they reflect core values of inclusion, help attract and retain talent, foster innovation, and strengthen relationships with customers and suppliers. Their Board of Directors wrote in a statement:
“As our membership diversifies, we believe that having a diverse team improves satisfaction. A diverse workforce brings creativity to our products, better understands customer preferences, and reflects the diverse backgrounds of the members we serve.”
Shareholders will vote on the proposal at Costco’s Annual Meeting on Jan. 23, with the outcome potentially shaping the future of corporate DEI policies.
