Makeup Artist Patrick Ta Issues Apology Over Transition Blush Launch Controversy Following Accusations He Copied Technique From Painted By Esther

Celebrity makeup artist #PatrickTa is issuing an apology after facing backlash over the launch of his new Transition Blush collection.

ICYMI: Ta came under fire after many accused him of capitalizing on a method widely popularized by fellow artist Ngozi Esther Edeme, known as #PaintedbyEsther. His collection — featuring multiple blush formulas and tools — quickly sparked online debate, with beauty lovers pointing out similarities to Esther’s signature layered blush style that’s been gaining major traction across social media. Esther has gone viral multiple times for her application method, including work on #Olandria, Tyla, Chloe Bailey, #KellyRowland, and Naomi Campbell.

As the conversation intensified, Esther addressed the situation, noting she doesn’t claim to have created the method, but made it clear her influence shouldn’t be overlooked. She also alleged that, ahead of the launch, someone from Ta’s team attempted to book and film her performing her signature routine — a claim that only fueled the backlash. In his apology, Ta said it was never his intention to take ownership of the blush method, but acknowledged why some felt otherwise. He added that he now understands the issue was about ensuring Esther’s “recognition” and “visibility” weren’t overshadowed. “Black creators have had an enormous influence on beauty culture, trends, and artistry, and that influence often goes unattributed and unrewarded,” Ta said. “I have tremendous respect for Esther and for all the artists and creators who have helped shape and advance this technique.”
