Rihanna And Jay-Z’s ‘Umbrella’ Surpasses 1 Billion Views On YouTube

While fans wait for the release of Rihanna’s ninth studio album, her previous music is still doing numbers.

The official video for her single ‘Umbrella,’ featuring Jay-Zhas officially reached 1 billion views on YouTube.

First released in March 2007, ‘Umbrella’ was the breakout single for Rihanna’s Good Girl, Gone Bad album (‘Breakin’ Dishes’, ‘Shut Up and Drive’, ‘Hate That I Love You’ and ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ were other fan faves).

The video was published on YouTube on Dec. 13, 2009, and served as a coming-of-age moment for Rihanna as she traded in her long highlighted hair for a short jet-black bob and danced in the rain with an umbrella for sultry choreographed scenes.

It peaked at No.1 on Billboard’s coveted Hot 100 chart and stayed there for seven weeks, making ‘Umbrella’ one of Rihanna’s most popular songs in her two-decade career. She went on to work with Jay-Z on hits like ‘Run This Town’, which also featured Kanye West, and ‘Talk That Talk.’

Meanwhile, Rihanna doesn’t seem to be focused on her music career right now. She has since welcomed two sons with boyfriend A$AP Rocky and is reportedly expecting a third child. She also made her mark in the beauty industry with her billion-dollar makeup brand Fenty.

Still, A$AP Rocky gave fans hope that new music from Rihanna is on the way. While taking photos with fans in Paris on February 17, the ‘Am I Dreaming’ rapper shared a brief update on the album, allegedly titled R9.

“She’s working on it,” he told bystanders who asked about the project.

Seven years have passed since the multi-hyphenate released her most recent album, Anti, in 2016.

Featuring songs like “Work,” “Consideration,” and “Close To You,” Rihanna once called it her “most brilliant album yet.
