#Emmyssowhite Trends After No Actors Of Color Win In Major Categories, 50 Cent Reacts: The Emmys Still Has A Separate Bathroom For Colored Folks
Yesterday evening (September 19) the 73rd Emmy Awards took place in Los Angeles, California. This year’s Emmy ceremony was a historic event and set a record for having the most nominees of color up for an acting award. However, despite having the most diverse nomination lineup in Emmy Awards history, all the major acting trophies were ultimately awarded to white actors.
‘Pose’ actor Billy Porter was among the list of actors of color who were favored to win in their nominated category. He was up for the lead actor award in a drama series, however, he lost to Josh O’Connor.
Billy Porter’s co-star Mj Rodriguez is the first transgender woman to be nominated in a major acting Emmy category. She lost the lead actress award to Olivia Colman.
The late Michael K. Williams was nominated for supporting actor in a drama series for his work on ‘Lovecraft Country’ However, Tobias Menzies from ‘The Crown’ won the award.
Following the event, rapper/TV producer 50 Cent, born Curtis Jackson III, took shots at the awards ceremony over the lack of wins for actors of color. In a now-deleted Instagram post, the 46-year-old entertainer shared an article detailing the disappointing turnout from the event. He captioned the post,
“Listen the Emmy’s still has a separate bathroom for colored folks. I’m gonna put the NAACP awards on air at the same time and f*ck up their numbers. No, they really should be afraid of me I’m different.”
50 Cent isn’t the only person not feeling the Emmys this year. Many television fans used the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite to express their feelings about the ceremony.
