Larenz Tate Is No Longer Interested In A “Love Jones” Sequel, Says He Doubts It Would Live Up To Expectations
Fans of the romance film “Love Jones” can pretty much give up hope on getting a sequel.
During a recent interview Larenz Tate, the star of the iconic 90’s movie, admitted that he and his costar Nia Long have considered a follow up movie but ultimately have decided against it.
The 48-year-old reportedly stated:
“It would be hard for us to catch lightning in the bottle twice,”
And continued:
“Nia [Long] and I have been trying to figure out what that would look like. But we feel like we should do something, but something different.”
Tate continued, sharing that the on-screen lovers have talked about doing a TV series or “move that could be a franchise” together and give fans another chance to enjoy their chemistry, adding:
“We’ve discussed everything. We talked about all kinds of stuff because we know what Love Jones meant, we know what those characters meant, and we know what the message and the story meant to us. And we don’t want to disrupt that, we don’t want to shake that up, and do something that doesn’t live up to our expectations of our audience would want from us,”
Fans have been pushing for a second “Love Jones” movie since its 1997 debut. Despite not doing huge numbers at the box office, the Black cinema classic has maintained its popularity throughout multiple generations for its nuanced take on love, art, and poetry. In the past, both Nia Long, 52, and Tate expressed a desire to possibly reconnect for a follow up project. However, it seems steam for a sequel has finally run out.
While the fictional love interests continue to brainstorm other routes they could take in terms of working together again, the “Menace II Society” star did share other projects he’d like to pursue. Elsewhere in the interview, Tate reportedly stated that he wants to reprise his role as Quincy Jones, who he originally portrayed in the “2004” biopic “Ray” about singer and pianist Ray Charles. The movie, starring Jamie Foxx, was critically acclaimed and earned Foxx his first Oscar win.
Tate reportedly stated that these days he’s more interested in producing and starring in biopics about historical Black figures that weren’t entertainers. However, that seemingly excludes his desire to once again take on the role of Quincy Jones. He reportedly added about portraying the Motown Founder in his own biopic:
“He’s at the top of my list.”
