President Joe Biden Ends His 2024 Re-Election Bid, Endorses VP Kamala Harris As The Democratic Nominee
President Joe Biden has suspended his re-election campaign.
The head of state announced in a post earlier today that he will no longer be seeking a second term, and has endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris as the next Democratic nominee.

Joe Biden, 81, made the declaration in several messages posted to social media accounts earlier today (Sunday, July 21st). The 46th president shared an official address first, stating that he feels it is in the country’s “best interest” for him to step aside as Democratic choice to face off against Republican nominee Donald Trump in the presidential election come November, writing in a letter:
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.

In a follow up post, Joe Biden made it clear that he believes his running mate Kamala Harris, 59, should assume his role and become the next choice for the Democratic party, writing to X (formerly Twitter):
“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

News of Biden’s exit from the race comes as he was facing mounting pressure from his fellow Democrats to drop out. As we’ve been covering, big name blue-party fundraisers such as George Clooney publicly called for Biden to end his campaign bid, as concerns over his health and cognitive function were exacerbated by his debate against Donald Trump last month. To make matter worse, reports claimed that Biden’s former running mate, 45th President Barack Obama, also believed it was his time to bow out of the race.

At this time it doesn’t appear that Kamala Harris nor Barack Obama have spoken about Biden’s campaign end publicly. We will continue to update as the story unfolds.
