EXCLUSIVE: Russell Simmons/Universal Owes Old School Artist Oran ‘Juice’ Jones Money For Hit Song “The Rain”
Russell Simmons/Universal Owes Old School Artist Oran ‘Juice’ Jones Money For Hit Song “The Rain”
theJasmineBRAND exclusively reports, Russell Simmons owes a few coins to one of his old school artist’s. Unfortunately, 2018 has been a challenging year for the founder and former CEO of Def Jam Records.
The 60-year-old was accused of sexual assault by six separate women in recent months and now in a notarized letter obtained exclusively by us, Simmons acknowledged that his former artist Oran “Juice” Jones is owed 15% of the publishing for his 1986 hit single “The Rain.” See the docs.
And check out the song below.
Since Universal acquired the publishing rights in their 1999 purchase of Def Jam, they are on the hook for any monies earned by the song after that period.
The song in its original incarnation was written by Vincent Bell but later given to Jones, who re-wrote the lyrics. The split was supposed to be 85% going to Bell and 15% going to Jones, but as Jones says in the letter below, it wasn’t until the song was sampled for the “Suicide Squad” soundtrack without his permission that he learned of his omission from the songs publishing royalties. Since the album came out on Atlantic Records, that would technically owe Jones for monies earned by the use of the “The Rain” sample.
