Kourtney Kardashian: I Have To Make Sure My Kids Understand What It Means To Have White Privilege

In the wake of the numerous protests and petitions for justice for George Floyd, a Minnesota resident who died after being knelt on by former police officer Derek Chauvin for over 8 minutes, many celebrities have taken time to speak out on their feelings about the case and how they are having discussions with their family about the current unrest occurring across America and the globe.

Kourtney Kardashian has followed suit and shared on Instagram that she is teaching her three children–Mason, 10; Reign, 5; and Penelope, 2–about Black history and racism. She writes:

As a mother, there is a natural instinct to protect my children from anything that might make them feel sad or unsafe. The pain and suffering inflicted by racism is not a thing of the past and I bare the responsibility to speak with my kids honestly and often about it, even when the truth is uncomfortable. I have to make sure they understand what it means to have white privilege and to take the time to learn and discuss Black History, beyond just one short month out of the year.

Kourtney Kardashian continued her post with a call to fellow mothers to teach their children so they are not afraid to talk about sensitive issues:

Allow conversation without judgement, and learn from our children too. We don’t know it all. My children sometimes ask questions that I may not know the answers to, so we explore them together. I’ve felt like I’ve always been on the right side of this, but I have a lot to learn and want to educate myself even more, so that I can be a better mother, a better auntie to my nieces and nephews, a better friend, and a better person.

Kourtney Kardashian is not alone in her efforts. Her sisters, Khloe, Kylie, and Kim have all shared their feelings on Instagram as well. Khloe Kardashian posted an essay on her Instagram a few days ago with similar sentiments. Her caption indicated that she had struggled with what she wanted to express:

Over the last few days I’ve written and rewritten this so many times. Words feel empty, or somehow not enough, but I can’t sit silently. #BlackLivesMatter #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd

Kylie Jenner, the youngest of the Kardashian sisters, also shared her thoughts on the police-involved death of George Floyd in the caption of her IG post with a single quote of Martin Luther King, Jr.:

“There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”

Her caption indicated that she realizes she will never truly understand the fear black people in America experience on a daily basis but she feels the need to speak out:

Speaking up is long overdue for the rest of us. we’re currently dealing with two horrific pandemics in our country, and we can’t sit back and ignore the fact that racism is one of them. i fear for my daughter and i hope for a better future for her. my heart breaks for George Floyd’s family and friends. Don’t let his name be forgotten.

It should be noted that Kim Kardashian-West has been heavily involved in causes to help with prison reform particularly for the release of African-Americans who have been unjustly detained for various reasons. Her post responding to the death of George Floyd indicated that she, too, is angry about all the loss endured at the hands of systemic racism:

I am exhausted by the heartbreak I feel seeing mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and children suffering because their loved one was murdered or locked away unjustly for being black.
