Eve Says She Was ‘Devastated’ When She Was Dropped From Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Label For Eminem
Eve is opening up about her rise to fame and how she got signed to Ruff Ryders, after being dropped by Dr. Dre for Eminem.
She said Dr. Dre first noticed her flow and she moved to Los Angeles from Philly, only to be dropped by his label Aftermath eight months later.
“I remember that when I was working with Dre, Eminem did get signed.”
Around that time, she said Dr. Dre ghosted her and she would have to pop up on him in the studio.
“I would literally show up to studio sessions that I wasn’t supposed to be at where I knew Dre was gonna be and be like, ‘So, when am I recording? When are you gonna put me in a song? What’s going on?’ I think he got sick of that and then I got dropped eight months later.”
She continued:
“It wasn’t too long after Eminem got signed, I got dropped from Aftermath. I was devastated.”
Eve says that after the humbling experience, she returned home to her mother’s house in Philly but shortly after she became the first lady of Ruff Ryders.
She also talks about her 2-month stint as a dancer at the strip club, and how rapper Mase inspired her to give up dancing and take her rap career seriously.
“It was a slow night and this guy comes walking in, and one of the girls who I hung out with was like, ‘Yo that’s that new kid, he just got signed to Puff.’ I go over there and I’m kinda just like, ‘Yeah, what’s up, you want a dance?’… He just laughed, actually, and he was like, ‘What do you wanna do with your life?’ And I was like, ‘You don’t know me, don’t be asking about me!’ Long story short, he literally was like ‘You’re not supposed to be here. What is it that you wanna do?’ I told him I wanna be a rapper, and he was like, ‘Get dressed, let’s go ride around the city and listen to some beats.’”
This isn’t the first time the rapper turned TV host has opened up about her time at Aftermath with Dr. Dre.
She revealed last year that he signed her to Aftermath – and the connection is all thanks to marijuana. She shared that her managers at the time were well-known drug dealers, so they told her to pretend to be the “weed girl” to sell Dr. Dre weed when he came to Philly. She said she asked her friends,
“What the hell am I going to do when I got no weed?”
They told her,
“[We’ll] just put some music on, and you start rapping.”
She continued and said,
“So we got to this house .. I stood up, they put a tape in, and I started rapping. And the guy was like, ‘What the f***.Where’s the weed?’?”
But it ended up working out for her, at least for the time being.
“He finished listening to me, he let me rap, and then he called Dre right there and was like, ‘I think we found our girl.’ That next weekend, I was in LA recording a demo for Dr. Dre.”
She later found success with the Ruff Ryders label and released hit songs like Who’s That Girl and Love Is Blind.
