Regina King To Direct Race-Themed Monster Movie ‘Bitter Root’ Alongside Ryan Coogler
Actor, director, and in-demand filmmaker Regina King, will be helming a new project, a race-themed monster movie ‘Bitter Root‘ for Legendary Entertainment.
Regina King will also produce the project with Reina King via their Royal Ties company.
The producing team also includes Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian, under their Proximity Media company.
Regina King won acclaim for her Oscar-nominated directorial debut with One Night in Miami, an adaptation of Kemp Power’s 2013 stage play depicting a 1964 meeting of the minds with Malcolm X, Cassius Clay [also known as Muhammad Ali], Jim Brown, and singer extraordinaire Sam Cooke. The film earned three Oscar nominations.
With an Oscar win under her belt for If Beale Street Could Talk and four Emmys, Regina King has set her sights on a monster-filled, 1920s Harlem Renaissance & race-themed comic book adaptation.
The Hollywood Reporter describes the project as a sort of Get Out meets Blade. Bitter Root is set in 1924 during the Harlem Renaissance era and tells of the Sangeryes, a family of once-great monster hunters, who face an evil that descends upon New York.
A statement released from Legendary, the company behind the recent box office hit Godzilla vs. Kong] reads:
“For generations, the Sangeryes have hunted and cured those infected by a supernatural force that feeds off of prejudice and transforms humans into monsters. But with most of the family gone, the remaining Sangeryes disagree over saving or killing the monsters.”
The comic received an Eisner nomination in 2019 for best new series and a Ringo for best series.
Regina King has explored the comic book space before, delivering an Emmy-winning performance in HBO’s Watchmen.
