Eddie Murphy Says He’s Open To Do A ‘Shrek 5’ Film Or A Donkey Spinoff: I’d Do It In Two Seconds

Eddie Murphy says he’s open to reprising his role as Donkey in a potential fifth “Shrek” movie or a Donkey spinoff.

In a recent interview, Eddie Murphy expressed his desire for Donkey to get his own spinoff. So far, only Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots has received a “Shrek” spinoff with 2011’s “Puss in Boots” and 2022’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” according to reports.

During his interview, Eddie Murphy shared that Donkey is far funnier and more deserving of a spinoff than Puss in Boots. He said,

“I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another ‘Shrek,’ I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey. You know, they did ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.’”

Eddie continued,

“I would do a Donkey movie. I would do another ‘Shrek’ in two seconds.”

When the interviewer suggested he should “pull some strings” in order to get a Donkey spinoff made, the 61-year-old actor said that the decision is ultimately up to DreamWorks. Eddie responded,

“That’s DreamWorks Animation. They have to want to do it. DreamWorks, if you all want to do it, just call me. I’m ready, I’m sitting and ready to do Donkey.”

To date, the “Shrek” franchise has released four feature films between 2001 and 2010. The original “Shrek” turned DreamWorks Animation into a powerhouse studio with its $487 million worldwide gross. The movie reportedly became the first Oscar winner in the animated feature category. “Shrek 2” grossed $928 million. While “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After” earned less acclaim than the first two movies, they still managed to gross $813 million and $752 million worldwide.

Lately, Eddie has been doing more press in order to promote his latest Netflix movie, “You People.” As previously reported, during a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the comedian recalled a time when Michael Jackson was so shy at a party at Sammy Davis Jr.’s house that he hid behind a door.

Jimmy Kimmel asked Eddie if it was true that he watched the movie “Cocoon” with Sammy Davis Jr. at his house. Eddie explained that Sammy Davis Jr. would often have movie nights at his home and several celebrities would attend. Eddie recalled,

“I wasn’t the only one there. Sammy would have movie night on Tuesday night and you would go there and all the stars–like I saw Steve and Eydie Gorme, Lucille Ball, and you know Michael [Jackson] would be there…”

He then told a funny story about Michael Jackson hiding because there were too many people at Sammy’s house.

“He was behind the door at first because it was too many people..”

Eddie elaborated and continued,

“It was too many people in the room. He was hiding behind the door. He said, ‘Eddie, come!’”

Michael Jackson then called on Eddie to join him behind the door, where the comedian then said,

“What the f**k, yo?”
