Michael K. Williams – 71-Year-Old Drug Dealer Charged In Connection To Actor’s Death Sentenced To Two Years In Prison Following ‘The Wire’ Creator’s Request For Leniency
An elderly man has been spared from living the remainder of his years behind bars.
Carlos Macci, a 71-year-old drug dealer arrested for his role in the overdose death of actor Michael K. Williams, was only sentenced to two years in prison after the “The Wire” creator pleaded for leniency.
David Simon, who worked closely with Michael K. Williams during his time on the HBO drama, sent a letter to Judge Ronnie Abrams on behalf of Macci earlier this month. Simon asked the judge to consider a lighter sentence as he believes that is what his late friend would have wanted.
Williams was known to share his disapproving opinions on mass incarceration and the war on drugs. His nephew, Dominic Dupont, also spoke to this, stating that his famous uncle believed in second chances. Dupont reportedly joined the plea on Macci’s behalf, telling the court in a hearing on Tuesday (Jul. 25) his uncle was:
“a person who believed in love, believed in an opportunity for people to get themselves together.”
It seems the collective efforts to save Macci from life in jail were successful. Despite the judge reportedly “struggling” to make the decision, Abrams ultimately handed down a two-year sentence. Judge Abrams reportedly stated during the hearing:
“Selling drugs like heroin and fentanyl not only cost Mr. Williams his life but is costing you your freedom,”
And added:
“I don’t think people need to be defined by the worst mistake they made,”
Macci has already been in jail for nearly a year and a half for his role in Williams‘ death. Though he was not directly charged, he was found to be part of the crew that sold the entertainer the fentanyl-laced heroin. As a result, Williams was found deceased in his apartment on September 6th, 2021. Reports also note that Macci continued to sell drugs after. Three other individuals have pleaded guilty in the case, including Irving Cartagena who was seen on camera handing the deadly drugs to Williams the day before his death.
Reportedly, Cartagena is set to be sentenced on August 18th and is facing 40 years in prison. Hector Robles and Luis Cruz, the other two co-defendants, are reportedly set to be sentenced on Sept. 26.
