Former NBA Stars Kenyon Martin, Gilbert Arenas, & Brandon Jennings Talk Dating & “Groupie” Code Among Players: Your Main Chick, Wife, Girlfriends & ‘Special Work’ Are Off Limits, If You Violated – We Trying To Get You Off The Team
A few veteran basketball players recently shed some light on how athletes handle dating and having relations with women while running in the same circle.
Ex NBA stars Kenyon Martin, Gilbert Arenas, and Brandon Jennings discussed the matter, claiming there’s a spoken code about how things work, and that players may find themselves ostracized if they don’t follow suit.

The conversation took place on the Gil’s Arena podcast where the hoopers shared their “unfiltered” advice to rookies on a variety of subjects. When the topic of dating culture and relationships came up, the men didn’t shy away from being honest about their reality of dating and explained the importance of having open dialogue with teammates about what’s going on to avoid pettiness and jealousy. Former Milwaukee Buck Kenyon Martin, 45, says he personally discussed the topic with his son KJ Martin, 22, who is currently playing his 4th year in the league.

Martin explained that he told his son, who was hanging out with an unnamed woman at the time, not to be surprised if she was messing around with someone else on the team. The celebrity dad went on to claim that KJ ended up confirming his speculations after finding the woman in another players room during a subsequent retreat. Brandon Jennings, 34, chimed in, stating that knowing how things go down “in this era”, the story isn’t hard to believe, prompting Martin to proclaim:
“It’s treacherous out here in these streets, bruh…Ain’t no moral code out here.”

Gilbert Arenas, 41, then shared his thoughts, admitting that he once told his teammates that “70%” of them would date women who would sleep with other players. According to him, a rookie is at a disadvantage when it comes to dating because they are basically still at the bottom of the food chain. He explained:
“You’re introducing her to a life that you are the beginning of…No matter if you the No. 1 pick, you are the bottom end of it. Right? There’s players on that team that you watched and admired, they watched and admired, they had crushes on.”

Continuing, the champion athlete disclosed the rules that he and his teammates had for each other to avoid any issues when it comes to dating and being in relationships, adding:
“Your main chick, your wife, your girlfriend, ‘special work’: off limits. … Those are protected. After that, up for grabs. So if you violated and hit somebody’s ‘special work,’ we trying to get you off the team. We don’t want you no more.”
