“Atlanta’s” 3rd Season Might Be Focused On Women
The FX show Atlanta, starring Donald Glover, has just been renewed for a third season. Since its premiere in 2016, the show has garnered audience and viewership of many, and has earned two Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Peabody Award. With the success of their second season, the writers of the show have already begun planning the theme for their upcoming season.
Donald Glover’s brother, Stephen Glover, is the head story editor for the series, and spoke about the new women empowered direction he wants the show to take explaining,
I think the city of Atlanta has a lot of stories from the woman’s point of view, and there’s a very specific perspective from Atlanta women that I think we’re gonna explore in season three.
In this past season, viewers got a glimpse of stories told from a female perspective. In the episode titled, “Champagne Papi,” Zazie Beetz (Van) and her friends get invited to a New Year’s Eve house party supposedly thrown by Drake. Beetz spoke about the opportunity for more female-centric stories,
It was so fun having this girl vibe. There’s no lack of women on the set, but I think in terms of storytelling, it is different. [It’s] just like bonding with a woman and playing with that energy in terms of Van’s character. So it is something I would like to continue exploring.
For the past two seasons, the story lines for the characters have been mainly from a male’s point of view – onscreen and in the writer’s room. Stephen said,
I think we have some cool ideas in season three that’ll put some more women on screen.
The second season’s theme was titled Atlanta: Robbin Season and was comprised of 11-episodes that detailed different ways you could be robbed: money, time, dignity, and sense of self. The series displays the ups and downs of two cousins (Donald Glover and Brian Tyree Henry) – and their friend (Lakeith Stanfield) – trying to navigate through life and Atlanta’s music scene.
The third season is slated to premiere in 2019.
