Boxing Champion Claressa Shields Fires Back at Critics, Slams ‘Ugly Narrative’ and Defends Blackness
Claressa Shields isn’t holding her tongue — and she doesn’t think she should have to.
The undefeated boxing champion took to social media to address critics she says have been tearing down Blackness, Black women, and Black unity, making it clear she refuses to join what she called the “hate train” against her own people.
“Boy y’all hate everything about blackness, being black, black women, black support, black unity, black noses, black asses,” Shields wrote, adding that she finds the commentary “really sad.” She went on to stress that she’s never felt pressured to conform to outside beauty standards, noting that she didn’t wear a full face of makeup until she was 24 years old. “Still Beautiful & Blessed,” she added.
Shields followed up with another post, pushing back on what she described as an “ugly narrative” surrounding her appearance and growth over the years. “I was 17 years old fighting for my entire country and had an OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL AROUND MY NECK!” she wrote, pointing out that her focus at the time was competition — not image. “Of course I glowed up!”
The boxing star made it clear that discipline has always come first, adding that she remains locked in on her goals regardless of public chatter. “I’m going to always be focused no matter what! LIKE ALWAYS!” she concluded.
Claressa Shields, widely regarded as one of the greatest female boxers of all time, has long spoken openly about confidence, self-worth, and the pressures placed on Black women in sports — and this latest response shows she’s still not backing down.
