Justice Department Announces $1.7 Billion Fund To Compensate Trump Allies In Deal To Drop IRS Suit

The #DOJ has announced a $1.7 billion “anti-weaponization” fund tied to a controversial settlement involving President Donald Trump’s legal fight against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns.

The agreement comes after #Trump dropped a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS, which stemmed from the unauthorized release of his tax records by a former government contractor. In exchange, the DOJ would create the fund to compensate individuals who claim they were unfairly targeted by the Biden administration Justice Department. The initiative is framed by officials as a way to address alleged government “weaponization” and provide financial redress to those who say they were harmed by such actions.

Under the plan, eligible claims could be filed by people who were prosecuted for rioting at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Critics have sharply condemned the move, calling it a politically driven payout to Trump allies and questioning the legality and oversight of the arrangement.
